Throw the Bums Out Kids need to be outside, and with the likes of Richard Louv inspiring the nation, there is a push to fund programs that support outdoor education & getting kids to go play in the woods again.
Working locally, I am supporting this effort by leading a scout troop, working on improving recreational access to trails in my area, and organizing parents, teachers, village planners, and kids to walk and bike to school. It's very satisfying to work at the local level, and to see results in my community!
Speaking of community, here in New Mexico the FABULOUS Kristina Ortez of the Sierra Club has been organizing educators, land managers, health care workers and interested individuals to promote statewide initiatives to reconnect children with the outdoors. The most recent session had over twice as many attendees as expected, and generated all kinds of solid action plans. You may have a similar program where you are, but only NM is lucky enough to have Kristina Ortez. ;- )
What can you do in your community? Probably many of the same things. There are kids everywhere in this country who need someone to unplug them and throw them out the door. Try it, they'll like it!
