Happy 100th Birthday New Mexico!
Boy, it seems like just a few years ago you were only 400!

In celebration of the Centennial of statehood, folks around the state are putting their efforts into some awesome public history projects. I have contributed myself with an online Atlas of Historic New Mexico maps and now a book! How exciting!

It's called Forgotten Tales of New Mexico and it's all the stories I found interesting or illuminating as I've studied our state's illustrious (or nefarious) past. It's light, it's funny and there's plenty of sex, scandal and supernatural beings, just like in The Remembered Tales of New Mexico. You'll even learn something new about the Land of Enchantment! It will be available soon from the History Press, at the low, low price of $12.99.

The Atlas of course is freely available to anyone with an internet connection and a modern browser. I would particularly like to see it getting used in classrooms this year, so if you are a teacher and you're looking for some great lesson plans then check out the education section of the site. Don't forget to let the New Mexico Humanities Council know how you're using it!

Time to break out the cake!

Throw the Bums Out
Kids need to be outside, and with the likes of Richard Louv inspiring the nation, there is a push to fund programs that support outdoor education & getting kids to go play in the woods again.

My current effort is for the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails, chairing the Community Partners committee. This committee is actively seeking out partners across central and northern New Mexico who offer opportunities for girls to participate in local agriculture and gardening programs. I've also been at the Roundhouse in Santa Fe lobbying for the Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights.

It's very satisfying to work at the local level, and to see results in my community! What can you do in your community? It's easy to get involved. There are kids everywhere in this country who need someone to unplug them and throw them out the door. Try it, they'll like it!

Well for one thing, enough of a philosopher to question whether this question can ever really be answered, much less in a couple of paragraphs. As Queenellen of Queenellen Enterprises, I take the field of public lands interpretation into cyberspace. I'll tell you the best thing about virtual tourists:...
